Happy Holidays!!! 26 Dec 2010 8:36 pm
We wish you all a happy holiday season!
Weâve been back in the States about 3 months now and thought weâd drop you a note on whatâs happening.
I settled back into work at my former employer relatively quickly. That was a definite perk of returning to a familiar place, a very short learning curve. Everyone has been curious to know if it was hard to go back to work. Honestly, working must be like riding a bike: Once you learn, you never forget. Remember, I did work in New Zealand â I hated it but I did work.
There is one thing that took some getting used to and that was the sheer number of people. Wow, there are a lot of people in the Bay Area! While out of the country, we heard words like recession, downturn, jobless rate, etc⌠You wouldnât know it by the amount of people at the mall in September and you definitely wouldnât know it at commute time! To avoid traffic and keep things simple, we rented a one-bedroom apartment in Santa Clara, less than 5 miles from my office. After living on a 48-ft sailboat for three years and in a van for five months, apartment living provides more than enough room.
Jim and Woody arrived early in October, and boy was that nice! Since Jim was not working immediately, I had the joy of a personal assistant (a.k.a., a wife!). He did all the grocery shopping, cooking (he even washed ALL the dishes too!), paid the bills, ran errands (of which there we a lot because of settling back in to life in the U.S.), cleaned the house, did laundry and more. I was in no hurry to have Jim go back to work.
As luck would have it, Jim found a job quickly. When he contacted his old boss to act as a reference, he ended up with a job! Jimâs contracting with a very interesting and exciting company you may have heard of, Space X. It is the first commercial space launch and spacecraft company founded by the founder of PayPal and Tesla, Elon Musk. With Jim and I both working again we actually have positive cash flow!!! Thatâs one thing we havenât experienced in more than four years but weâre definitely enjoying adapting to that change.
The holiday season has been more special than usual this year since weâve been able to spend it in the company of family. We flew to Nevada and spent Thanksgiving with my parents, brother and his family. A wedding celebration in San Rafael the following week reunited us with Jimâs family. The week before Christmas we flew to Pennsylvania for some long overdue quality time with my 90 and 92-year-old grandparents. While there, we also visited with my aunt and uncle. Christmas took us to San Rafael again for holiday festivities with Jimâs family.
Some of our old routine has returned and thatâs not bad. I joined a gym and am working out regularly again. We watch football every weekend. Jim attended a Stars/Sharks hockey game. Patrick and I have resumed our weekly bike rides in the hills. I even bought a new bike to celebrate the occasion!!!
Everyone keeps asking us if we miss boat life or living overseas. The answer so far is, ânot as much as you might think.â Sure, we miss some things: sunsets (we werenât up early enough for many sunrises), playing with friends all day, everyday, ruining our liver and a beautiful sail on occasion. However, having been gone for four years, we are just as happy to be in a familiar country with some of the luxuries of land living: grocery stores, dishwashers, long hot showers, and Iâm thrilled to dress like a girl again.
With New Yearâs just around the corner, we plan to catch up with many of you we havenât seen yet in the year ahead. We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season!
